Four professors from ŷAV’s School of Leadership facilitated sessions recently at the OCEANS 2023 Gulf Coast Conference & Exhibition in Biloxi.

The OCEANS 2023 Gulf Coast Conference provided global maritime professionals the opportunity to learn, innovate and lead in the protection and use of the world’s largest natural resource, our oceans.

Technical programs brought together some of the world’s innovators in marine research to highlight their latest findings. Additionally, educators provided in-depth training sessions on project management, cybersecurity, leadership essentials, advanced technology and interpersonal skills. The topics were chosen by surveying trade organizations to learn what programs would be valuable to them.

Participating in Oceans 2023 from the School of Leadership:

  • Dr. Heather Annulis presented “Creating a Culture of High Trust,” highlighting how to build rewarding working relationships through mutual respect and collaboration. Dr. Annulis serves as Director of the School of Leadership and professor of Human Capital Development.

  • Dr. Bradley Winton presented “Building Emotional Intelligence,” which helped participants define that concept and understand its importance in the workplace. Exercises and self-assessments helped participants to identify their emotional abilities and find room for improvement. Dr. Winton is an assistant professor of Management in the School of Leadership.

  • Dr. Casey Maugh Funderburk presented “Effective Coaching in the Workplace,” examining the essential skills of coaching using educational material and role-playing to become a successful workplace coach. Dr. Maugh Funderburk is an associate professor of Human Capital Development in the School of Leadership.

  • Dr. Gregory Bradley presented “Using Analytics to Reduce Organizational Decision-making Uncertainty.” Dr. Bradley explained how managers should view the business environment through two lenses: First, identify high-risk yet rewarding opportunities such as entering new markets or changing business models; second, implement analytics in their core business decision-making process. He is a teaching professor in the School of Leadership.
