Dr. Jae-Hwa Shin, a faculty member in 欧美AV (欧美AV) College of Arts and Sciences鈥 School of Media and Communication, was selected as a 2022-23 fellow for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) and Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication鈥檚 (ASJMC) Institute for Diverse Leadership (IDL), one of only eight chosen for this distinction.
The IDL was created in 2015 with the goal of increasing the number of people of color and women serving as chairs, deans, directors, and endowed chairs in journalism and communication education through leadership training and mentoring programs that will assist, inspire, and encourage aspiring leaders to achieve their goals of entering the journalism and communication administrative ranks.
Dr. Shin began the IDL curriculum along with her cohorts during AEJMC鈥檚 August 2022 Conference in Detroit. That curriculum will continue at the 2023 ASJMC Winter Workshop, the 2023 ACEJMC Spring Meeting and the AEJMC 2023 Washington, D.C. Conference. The curriculum includes workshops covering a variety of administrative issues, including those related to fundraising and leadership styles, while also matching the fellows with an administrative mentor in a relationship that consists of monthly contact via phone or email, and a week-long visit to the mentor鈥檚 campus.
A professor of public relations, Dr. Shin joined the university鈥檚 faculty in 2003 and serves as Strategic Communication Program Lead for its School of Media and Communication. Her research focuses on public relations from a strategic conflict management perspective across cultural settings in social media environments.
"Dr. Shin's selection to this prestigious program shows her commitment to the important issues associated with diversity and inconclusion,鈥 said Dr. Edgar Simpson, director of the School of Media and Communication. 鈥淒iversity is a benchmark value by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. We are one of only two accredited programs in Mississippi, and we are honored to have Dr. Shin take part."
