Grab Samples Water Analysis
Collect water samples approximately one-half meter below the surface or middle of
the water column in a closed system. Invert a sterile bottle, remove the cap, collect
the sample, and replace the cap. If collecting samples from a boat 鈥� collect on the
windward side, out of the prop wash or any disturbance. An air space of approximately
one to one- and one-half inch from the top of the bottle must be left in the bottle
(for proper shaking). Samples delivered with insufficient shaking space will not be
analyzed. Ice the bottle for transport. Samples must be upright in ice, tightly
sealed, and not subject to contamination from melting ice. Bottles submerged in ice
(above the neck) will not be analyzed. An extra sample bottle should be collected
at the last station for use as a temperature check.
Meat Sample Analysis
Shellfish samples from oyster reefs should be collected using tongs or the dredge. Single set oysters can be removed from off-bottom oyster cages. About 15-20 medium size oysters are necessary to constitute a sample. Oysters should be rinsed thoroughly and placed in a double-lined plastic bag. Seal the bag and place on ice, not in ice.
